Minted Jewellery is Andre van der Berg. I design and make the pieces myself, from a workshop in Centurion, and I have been doing it since 2017.
Most of what we do is custom. Someone arrives with an idea, usually a few pictures of something they like, and we work out how to turn it into a ring they will actually wear. About nine out of ten pieces that leave here were designed for one particular person.
How a custom piece works
We talk it through on WhatsApp or email, and I put together two or three designs. More if you are still deciding, which is normal.
You get renders to look at, so you can see the ring before it exists. We keep changing it until you are happy. Nothing is made until you say so.
Then the stones are sourced, and the piece is cast, set and finished. That takes two to three weeks from the day you approve a design. Finding the right stone is almost always the slow part, and it is what sets the date.
Half up front, the balance when it is finished.
A workshop, not a shopfront
Working from a workshop rather than a store means you are dealing directly with the person making your ring, rather than a salesperson passing a message to a workshop somewhere else.
If you are anywhere near Centurion, you are welcome to come past. Most custom work starts with a coffee and a look at what you have in mind. It is easier than typing, and it means you know exactly who you are dealing with.
The meteorite and the coins
Alongside the custom work we make pieces from things most jewellers will not touch.
Meteorite. Muonionalusta from Sweden, older than the Earth. Seymchan from Russia. Gibeon, which fell in Namibia, a few hundred kilometres from here. Cut and set, each one carries a pattern that formed while it cooled over millions of years, and no two are the same.
Old South African coins. Twenty cents, two and a half shillings, the 1c with Eendrag Maak Mag on it. Formed into rings so the original lettering stays on the outside. Only the older coins work. Modern ones are made in layers and come apart.
What you can expect
Every piece we make carries a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship. If something we made fails, send it back and we will fix it. No time limit and no charge. Damage from knocks, wear or accidents is not covered, but we will quote you for the repair.
If a ring does not fit, we resize it free.
We will give you a realistic date rather than the one you want to hear, and tell you if it moves.
